Well... believe it or not, a guy named John Perez whom used to dabble in the agriculture world for many years and had conducted some experiments in which he found out how to get your lawn looking great year round, keep it free from pests, and even keep all those insects and things out of your home and garden. What's moreso interesting is the fact that he did it all with household ingredients, most of which you probably have in your kitchen as we speak. He wrote an impressive ebook that details everything about it which is definitely worth the read, so you might want to check it out. http://www.squidoo.com/Home_and_Lawn_Pest_Control/ is one place with a good bit of information about it... it's like $15, but well worth the money, trust me. It'll save you hundreds or even thousands in the long run.... easy. Hell, I am currently making up the stuff myself and charging people to treat their homes, lol.

Long term successful pest control doesn't involve pesticides, it involves changing your environment from a pests point of view. It means locking your food sources away in sealed containers. And it involves sealing your leaky house off from the outside world where most bugs come from. That involves ordinary latex caulk and a caulking gun - start with the kitchen, then go from there, caulking every opening at the floors, around plumbing protrusions, any place there's a seam with a gap, basically. You don't have to do this all at once, but this gives you a goal to attack. In the meantime, you can dust diatomaceous earth in the cracks and under your house - diatomaceous earth never wears out, and acts as an effective deterrent to every crawling insect or spider. Use boric acid too, if you've got roaches. Both of these products can be used in the cracks before you caulk, and are exceedingly long lasting.

Rat control? Well, mostly you've got to make your house so tight rats can't get in. That involves stuffing steel wool inside every opening 1/4" or larger, all around the outside of your house.

These are the things that are least expensive, and provide the longest control. Otherwise, just pay an exterminator every year, and put up with pesticide residues instead. I bet this gets you started.

The only experience I have with any of those pests is spiders...

My mom wanted to get rid of all the spiders that were taking over her house. She did a Google search and found a spray called SpiderRepel. It's still working great, and she's been using it for a long time now.

Hope this helps! Good luck with your other critters!

Some of the other answers that are listed here definitely have some good advice. I suggest using some products from Black Flag, along with the advice about about locking up food etc. Black Flag has quite a variety of pest control products, that are affordable, easy to use, and work effectively. You can buy them online at www.blackflag.com.

Best of luck!!

Use natural deterrents. Hedge apples for roaches, cinnamon for ants, and so on. Here's an article with plenty of household pest cures:
